Using Patient-Reported Outcomes as Tools for Clinical Practice: a New Paradigm

New chapter in the Clinical Research Manual, written by Benoit Arnould, PhD, Director Patient-Centered Outcomes

The purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate that practicality and usefulness are the key for the dissemination of these tools in routine clinical care.
Self or interview-administered patient questionnaires have great potential application in the evolving field of healthcare. To facilitate their use in clinical practice, various instruments initially developed for clinical research have been abridged into shorter versions. However, their adoption by clinicians is limited by factors other than length or administration burden. Indeed, a major shift in perspective has to be considered when moving from clinical research to clinical practice: the issue is to shift from measurement instruments to decision-making tools.
